Cattle Heat Load Outlook

Heat Load Outlook

Extra-Tropical Cyclone Debbie

Ex-TC Debbie is still delivering heavy rains and damaging winds, affecting areas from the Capricornia to Northern NSW and inland from The QLD Coalfields down to the Warrego and Maranoa. Heavy showers and strong to gale force winds are predicted for these areas as the system moves south. Friday and throughout the weekend will be relatively clear and calm. This situation can be very detrimental to cattle as there is a high risk of a Rapid Rise in the HLI following the passage of Ex-TC Debbie.

Situation

  • WA: A ridge of high pressure is developing south of the State, with a high pressure system moving into the Bight. A weak cold front will brush the south coast Friday evening and Saturday morning. A trough will develop near the west coast during Sunday

  • SA: A high pressure system will develop southwest of the Bight today, then a weak cold front will move across southern coasts on Saturday morning and a new high pressure system will develop south of the Bight on Sunday

  • VIC:A cold front that crossed Victoria overnight has moved to the Tasman Sea, with a cooler and unstable southwesterly flow now affecting the State. A ridge of high pressure will extend over northern Victoria on Friday, with a weak cold front affecting southern Victoria on Saturday. A high pressure system will then develop over the Bight and extend a ridge across Tasmania on Sunday

  • NSW: A low pressure system lies over central eastern Queensland and is gradually moving southeast, while high pressure system over the Tasman Sea helps drag humid tropical air to northeastern New South Wales. At the same time a cold front over the far south and west of the state is moving east. This cold front will bring a vigorous southerly change to southern and western districts today, and to the northeast on Friday. The interaction between this front and the humid airmass from the north is forecast to generate widespread rain across eastern districts today, with moderate to heavy falls likely. Heavy rain is expected in northeast, due to the approaching low pressure system. Conditions are expected to ease later Friday as the front and low move away to the east, although a new high developing south of the Bight will bring follow-up showers to eastern areas

  • QLD: Ex-tropical cyclone Debbie is currently located over the central interior of Queensland and is expected to slowly track southeastwards before shifting off the southeast Queensland coast during tonight into Friday. The system is then expected to develop further off the southeast coast during Friday with gale force winds likely to develop through southern coast waters. A ridge will build through western Queensland today into Friday, extending drier and cooler air into much of the west of the state, and extending across much of the state over the weekend with fine and mostly sunny conditions developing over much of the state
